The shell doesn't read between the lines, and that's a good thing

To us, NAME = "Alice" and NAME="Alice" look almost identical. But the shell doesn't read between the lines. A space changes everything. At first, it feels inflexible.
But think about it: a system that tries to guess your intent is actually scary. When it guesses wrong, anything could happen. The shell does exactly what you write, nothing more. That makes it predictable. Run it 100 times, get the same result 100 times.
This "honest stubbornness" has kept servers running around the world for decades. Once you get used to it, what felt clumsy starts to feel trustworthy.
