The Tab key is an engineer's best friend

The moment you discover tab completion, everything changes. Type the first few characters of a filename, hit Tab, and the rest fills in automatically. Directory names, command names, all of it. Can't quite remember? Press Tab twice (once in zsh) and it shows you every possibility. Never having to type out a long filename again. Once you experience that, there's no going back.

The three great virtues of a programmer are "laziness, impatience, and hubris," said Larry Wall, the creator of Perl. Go all out to eliminate tedious work. The Tab key is the embodiment of that spirit. Watch a senior engineer's hands, and you'll notice how often they press Tab. Clack clack clack... tap. Clack... tap. Once you realize that rhythm is the sound of Tab, the terminal starts to look different.

You don't need to memorize everything. Tab remembers it for you.
