A Command That Survived the Tape Era

The tar command first appeared in 1979 with Unix V7. Back then, computers stored data on refrigerator-sized magnetic tape drives. Since tape could only be read and written sequentially, files had to be lined up and packed one after another onto a single reel. That's the origin of tar: tape archive.
Even though tape is long gone, the simple idea of "bundling multiple files into one" survived. Linux server backups, the contents of Docker images: they're all tar archives under the hood. A format created half a century ago for magnetic tape is still running in the cloud era.
You're solving the same problems that engineers solved half a century ago, using the same command. The terminal carries layers of history like that.
